Essential Maps (Unit 1)
The Columbian Exchange - essential to understanding the impact the interaction of cultures had on both the Old and New World.
The new crops, brought by the Europeans to the New World and home with them upon return, increased populations on both continents. Unfortunately, the exchange of disease had devastating effects on Native American groups, in particular.

Triangular Trade - the trade routes between Britain, Africa, the West Indian islands and the Americas. Also illustrates the Middle Passage route by which slaves were brought to the New World.

Native American Settlement
Numerous American Indian groups were settled within North America at the time of European arrival. Displacement began as early as the British settlement of Jamestown, Virginia in 1607 and continued throughout the 19th and 20th centuries as increasing numbers of American Indians fell victim to US policies of forcible relocation.

Early Colonial Settlement
Both the Spanish and English created permanent outposts in what would eventually become the United States. The Spanish settlement of St. Augustine, founded in 1565, is considered the oldest city in the US while Jamestown, established by the Virginia Company in 1607, is the first English settlement in North America.

Sir Walter Raleigh attempted to establish the first permanent English settlement in Roanoke, but found the colony had vanished upon his return from England. Historians are still unsure about what happened to this "lost colony".
