Louisiana Purchase 1803 |
The Louisiana Purchase changed the shape of the nation and presented seemingly endless opportunities for the expansion of white settlement in the West.

The War of 1812The new United States went to war with Britain a second time in 1812. Frustrated with British naval action and their encouragement of Native American antagonism in the West (and hoping to make territorial gains - Canada and Florida were both British territories), the United States fought the British for two years. The war brought no real gains for either nation, but it put to rest conflict between the two nations. The US and Britain have remained permanent allies.
