US Territorial Expansion |
The expansion of the United States to stretch to the Pacific coast during "manifest destiny" served to heighten the debate over slavery and increase tensions over the issue of "states' rights". Following the Mexican-American War in 1848, the inclusion of territory in the far west brought violence and warfare to the nation by 1861.
